Choose Right Courses Part - I



Choosing the right course after higher secondary is very important, since the professional career of an individual starts with his graduation. Keeping this in mind, after having completed his higher secondary in science:

Engineering: According to a recent survey conducted by the NCAER (National Council for Advanced Economic Research), Engineering is the most sought after course in India. There are many institutes that offer a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Some institutes term the Bachelor’s degree as BE or Bachelor of Engineering and some term it B.Tech or Bachelor in Technology. The job prospects increase manifold with a BE or B.Tech degree. You can get into the software field, or enter as a mechanical engineer or as an electrical engineer as per your specialization.

MBBS: For a science student with Biology in class 12, MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). It is the basic degree for an aspiring doctor. After completing your MBBS, you can specialize in fields such as neurosurgery, psychiatry and orthopedics. The job industry is huge, and you can work in a hospital or set up your own private clinic. There are many allied fields, such as BDS or, Bachelors of Dental Sciences. It is the graduate degree required for you to become a dentist.

B.Sc Maths: The course basically focuses on developing mathematical skills in algebra, calculus and data analysis. It prepares you for higher studies. Excellent career options are available in research and teaching institutions, technical institutions and various universities. Many financial services companies, data processing, testing and research centers of multinational companies also aggressively recruit mathematicians.

B.Sc Statistics: The curriculum of B.Sc (h) is designed in such a manner that you are taught subjects like probability and permutations. People who are good with statistics have much to look forward to. With a bachelor’s degree in Statistics, one can become a business analyst, research officer, data analyst or even an investigator.

B.Sc Economics: A BA or BSc Economics is one of the lucrative degrees in India today. While most of the colleges across India offer a Bachelors degree in Economics, some give a BA degree, some offer a BSc degree. Universities like the University of Delhi offer a BA degree while others like the University of Mumbai and the University of Calcutta offer a BSc degree. Economics is one of the sought after courses in India today. A degree in Economics can open up opportunities in investment firms, public sector undertakings, government enterprises and NGOs. You should do your post graduation to improve your career prospects and even take up research options in government organizations or join as a lecturer in a university or college. If you have a knack for writing you can also work as business or an economic writer in business journals and newspapers.
 
B.Arch: If you feel that you have a great imagination, ability to visualize things and you are good at drawing, you can pursue a course in architecture. Bachelor in Architecture is a 5 year long undergraduate course.

BAMS: Have you thought of pursuing a course in Ayurvedic medicine? If you have passed your 10 2 in science, then Bachelor in Ayurvedic Medicine or BAMS is one of the options that you can choose as your career. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine practiced in India and is gaining lot of popularity both in India and abroad.

B.Sc Nursing: Do you have patience? Do you believe in hard work? Are you organized and good in multi-tasking? Then, BSc Nursing would be a good option for you. It provides basic knowledge about nursing, first-aid and midwifery. You will be trained in all the theoretical as well as practical aspects of nursing. After completing the course you can join health institutes, medical colleges or private nursing homes as trained and certified nurses.

B.Sc Anthropology: Have you ever thought about studying the socio-cultural development of humans? Armed with a science background you can pursue a course in anthropology which traces the biological and the socio-cultural evolution of humans right from their origin.

B Pharma: B Pharma is one of the important options for students who have done 10 2 in science. B Pharma is usually a 4 years degree course and students who complete B Pharma can register themselves as pharmacist. After completing the course, you can work as pharmacist, drug inspector, drug therapist, health inspector, or as a drug technician.

B.Sc Occupational Therapy: If you love handling machines and equipments, if you have a logical and a scientific bent of mind, another relatively new option that you can explore is BSc Occupational Therapy (BOT). You can work with patients who suffer from orthopedic, neurological and psychological/psychiatric disorders.

B.Sc Physical Therapy: Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.P.T) prepares a student for the practice of physiotherapy. The program is designed to integrate cognitive, psycho-motor and interpersonal skills important to the development of a competent clinician.

B.Sc Zoology: Zoology is the branch of biology that focuses on behavior, structure and evolution of animals. After pursuing a B.Sc degree in Zoology, you can apply to courses like Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, Coastal Ecosystems Ecology and Management, Terrestrial and Marine Conservation Biology, Ecosystem Analysis, and Numerical Modeling. Alternatively, you can pursue M.Sc. in Zoology, after you complete your graduation. As a Zoologist or an Ecologist you can take up research oriented highly dynamic and exciting jobs and work with National Geography, Discovery, Animal Planet.
